One of Campbell River’s biggest boosters is the first recipient of a community award created by North Island-Powell River MP Aaron Gunn.
Yesterday, Gunn presented Carol Chapman with the the first-ever MP Distinguished Service Award at A Cut Above, her hair salon business in downtown Campbell River.

“On behalf of the people of North Island–Powell River, it is my honour to present Ms. Carol Chapman with the MP Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her decades of volunteerism and her commitment to making our city and region everything that it can be,” Gunn said. “Carol represents the very best of our nation. She is a pillar of strength for our city and the personification of community spirit. The people of Canada are grateful for her service, and Campbell River is lucky to have her.”
Chapman was named a Freeman of the City of Campbell River in 2024, the city’s highest civic honour. For more than 40 years, she has helped shape the community through service and volunteer efforts. She’s best-known for helping make local Canada Day celebrations one of the largest parties on Vancouver Island, with a parade, live music, and the biggest fireworks display in BC.
She has also helped raise more than $150,000 for the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund, supported Cops for Cancer and the Campbell River Storm hockey team, and helped care for animals through the local SPCA.
Thursday’s presentation was attended by Gunn as well as North Island MLA Anna Kindy, Mayor Kermit Dahl, and numerous friends and supporters.
The MP Distinguished Service Award will be awarded to a maximum of five recipients each year. To nominate someone in the North Island – Powell River region, contact Gunn’s office.
