There are now 15 fires burning on Vancouver Island, after several days of lightning and human activity this weekend, including one new fire south of the Comox Valley.

That fire was spotted Saturday south of Fanny Bay and is now burning out of control near the Cook Creek intersection. It is suspected to be caused by human activity and is currently about half a hectare in size (see featured image from BC Wildfire Service).

The service says that although smoke is visible from Fanny Bay, Deep Bay, Bowser and to motorists travelling along Highway 19 and Highway 19A, “this wildfire does not currently pose a threat to public safety or critical infrastructure.”

The six other out of control fires on the Island are west of Campbell River in the Woss area. All are small and suspected lightning strikes. The eight other fires burning on the North Island are now classified as being held.
