There are now three fires classed as “out of control” near Campbell River, including a small fire just inside Strathcona Provincial Park which was discovered yesterday.
The fire in Strathcona Provincial Park is just south of the park’s northern boundary, near the banks of the Salmon River, and was likely caused by lightning strikes in the area. It’s small — less than 100 square metres — but it is currently expected to spread.
Another fire the same size was discovered today along the same general latitude, just east of William’s Lakes. It’s also suspected to have been caused by lightning.
And a fire discovered north of Kalpit Lake earlier this week has now grown to more than six hectares in size, but isn’t expected to get much bigger. The BC Wildfire Service says the Kalpit fire, which was five hectares when first discovered on July 22, has “shown minimal growth in recent days and poses no threat to critical infrastructure.”
Crews continue to respond to all three fires with support from aviation resources and local contracted crews.
A fourth small fire, which was discovered northwest of Oktwanch River on July 22, is now classified as “under control.”
