Temporary home for health pros welcomes residents this fall

By Grant Warkentin

A new home aimed at visiting health care professionals has opened its waitlist, with the first residents expected in September.

The Health Professionals Housing facility next to the Campbell River hospital is nearing the end of construction, with interior work finishing up this summer. It will welcome the first occupants by the end of summer, says the Strathcona Regional District, which has been managing the project along with the “Just Like Home” lodge next door, which will give families a place to stay while travelling for medical appointments.

“This project is a great example of what local governments can accomplish when they take a regional approach to solving challenges, said Mark Baker, chair of the regional district board. “By helping healthcare professionals find housing and establish roots in our communities, we are making a long-term investment in the health and well-being of residents across the North Island.”

The professional housing facility will offer flexible accommodation for health care pros who are visiting the region for short-term assignments, completing training or placements, relocating to the community, or establishing long-term practice and employment in the North Island. It has 20 suites including studios for singles and two-bedroom units for families. There are full and partially-furnished options. Some are pet-friendly, and some feature private balconies and ocean views. Utilities and parking are included in all rates.

Healthcare professionals interested in learning more or joining the waitlist can visit the regional district’s project page to view the promotional video and apply.

The “Just Like Home” lodge will also be open for guests this fall.
