The Centennial Pool is closed until further notice, after vandals smashed their way into the change house building sometime during the night.
Lifeguards and staff who arrived this morning (July 24) to open the pool for regularly scheduled summer programming discovered smashed glass scattered on the pool deck and other damage at the northwest end of the change house, near a gate where the vandals may have gained entry. As a result, the whole pool is closed until further notice.
“City of Campbell River staff are assessing the damage and undertaking the necessary repairs to restore the facility,” says a statement from the city. “The RCMP have been notified and will be conducting a forensic investigation at the site throughout the day.
“The city asks the public to stay away from the facility and to follow all directions from city staff and RCMP personnel as repair work and the investigation continues.”
Groups with private bookings and individuals registered in programs that may be affected by the closure will be contacted directly.
“Thank you for your patience and understanding while the investigation and repair work are completed,” the city said.

Campbell River’s only public outdoor pool is located in Centennial Park, between Alder and Birch Streets, along 4th Avenue.
The incident is the latest in a string of vandalism and smash-and-grab crimes that have plagued the city since July 13.
