Indigenous high school grads in Campbell River celebrated several milestones during a special grad ceremony at the Kwanwatsi Big House on Thursday.
The ceremony honoured 100 Indigenous students graduating this year, the largest group in local history.
The ceremony was organized by School District 72’s Indigenous Education team and guided by the district’s Indigenous Education Council, which “works in partnership with the school district to support Indigenous student success and ensure events are grounded in culture, community, and respect,” according to the district.
Grads entered the Big House to drumming and singing and welcomes from community leaders. Each graduate was called forward and recognized, and received cedar headbands connecting them to their culture, identity, and community.
“This year’s celebration holds added significance. Reaching 100 graduates reflects continued growth and the collective efforts of students, families, schools, Indigenous communities, and the Indigenous Education Council,” said the district in a statement. “As graduates move forward into work, training, or post-secondary education, the district extends its congratulations to each student and their families.”
