Mark the date, sports fans, the city is turning Robron Park into a giant watch party in June to cheer on Canada’s soccer team with “Soccer by the Sea.”
On Thursday, June 18 from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., the park will have a giant screen set up for the public to cheer on Team Canada in their match versus Qatar, live-streamed from BC Place in Vancouver.
The event is family-friendly, and will feature additional activities designed to keep all ages engaged and entertained throughout the afternoon, including soccer-themed fun led by the Campbell River Youth Soccer Association.
“Whether you’re a lifelong fan or simply looking for a fun way to spend time outdoors with friends and family, this event is a great opportunity to come together to celebrate the vibrancy and diversity of our community and share in the excitement of the game,” says a statement from the city.
The event is free.
The FIFA World Cup starts June 11 and runs until the final on July 19.
Team Canada’s first match is on June 12, versus Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Three countries are hosting the event this year – Canada, Mexico, and the USA. Vancouver and Toronto are hosting 13 matches between them. In total there will be 48 teams participating in 104 matches.
