After impressing the judges at provincials last week, two teams of students from Campbell River are heading to the nationals.
In Abbotsford on April 15, four teams from School District 72 competed in the Skills Canada provincials, which allows students from around the province to take part in trade skills competitions. From cabinet-making to cooking, most trades are on display at the annual event.
Timberline Secondary students Julian Ciumac and Dana Kim, both in Grade 11, captured gold in video production. A statement from the school district points out it builds on their silver medal finish at provincials in 2024 and marks a strong return to the competition.
Carihi Secondary students Jett Taylor, Grade 12, and Indy Cook, Grade 10, also took gold in 3D animation. Taylor had earned bronze at provincials last year, making this year’s result a step higher on the podium.
Both teams will now represent British Columbia at the Skills Canada National Competition, where top students from across the country will compete.
Other locals were represented at the provincials, including Timberline student Kevin Johnstone, Grade 12, who competed in cabinetmaking in his second appearance at the provincial level. Carihi student Kayin Dennis, Grade 12, competed in baking in a third trip to provincials and plans to attend the Vancouver Island University Pastry Arts program this fall.
Skills Canada competitions give students a chance to test their skills in real-world challenges across trades and technology. For these students, that work is now taking them to the national stage.
The national competition will take place in Toronto from May 26-30.
