Island’s own hammer thrower smashes another sporting record

By Grant Warkentin

Nanaimo athlete Ethan Katzberg, who won Canada’s first-ever gold medal in the hammer throw during the 2024 Olympics, has done it again.

Yesterday Katzberg won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, setting a new record for the games with a throw of 80.97 metres. His throw was nearly four metres ahead of the silver medal winner, Iosif Kesidis of Cyprus, whose throw reached 76.97 metres.

Canadian Rowan Hamilton, also from BC, filled out the podium after earning bronze with his throw of 75.36 metres.

Currently Canada is ranked second overall in the games with 39 medals in total: 14 gold, 11 silver, and 14 bronze. Australia is dominating the games this year with 103 medals so far, including 47 gold.

August 1 is the final day of scheduled events.
