No danger expected from cluster of lightning-caused fires near Campbell River

By Grant Warkentin

Recent lightning storms have sparked several small fires west and northwest of Campbell River, but they are all small in size and not expected to spread.

The closest fire to Campbell River is located just west of Upper Campbell Lake. It started yesterday thanks to a lightning strike, but it’s currently being held and not expected to grow.

The BC Wildfire Service’s map shows the fire is located just south of Ranald Creek, and just west of the Nickie Creek Road.

Lightning is the cause of two fires close together south of Sayward in the mountains, east of Schoen Lake Park and North of Victoria Peak. One is already under control and the other is being held (not expected to spread any further).

There is one small lightning-caused fire out of control west of Sayward, just east of where Highway 19 crosses over the Eve River, but BC Wildfire Services expects it will soon be downgraded to “being held” status thanks to the efforts of firefighters.

There is only one other fire currently burning on Vancouver Island, a small blaze southwest of Buckley Bay. That fire is currently classified as “being held.”

In total there are currently five wildfires active on the Island.
