Bear banger prompts early-morning caution at elementary school

By Grant Warkentin

Police and school staff made sure Ecole des Deux Mondes students were in no danger this morning, after an early-morning incident nearby.

According to the Campbell River RCMP, local police received a report of shots fired and a kidnapping near the school’s location. The reports were later discovered to be unfounded.

At about 7:15 a.m. police took a call about potential shots fired on 7th Avenue, and a potential kidnapping. RCMP responded with multiple officers and vehicles, including the Emergency Response Team.

After interviewing witnesses on scene, police determined that a witness had set off a “bear banger” in hopes someone would hear it and call 9-1-1, as the individual had no cell phone to make a report.

Further investigation into the alleged kidnapping was deemed unfounded and the witness has been provided with the necessary medical care he may need.

RCMP worked closely with the school to make sure students, parents, and staff were safe during the morning drop-off. The whole incident was over by around 9:30 a.m. this morning.
