Port Hardy Legion closed after lack of community support

By Grant Warkentin

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 237 in Port Hardy is now closed.

“It’s with a heavy heart that we share this news with our community,” says a statement on the Legion’s Facebook page. “Like many Legion branches, we are a volunteer-run organization and we rely on community involvement. Over the past while, we have put out calls for volunteers and for Legion members willing to step into executive roles to help share the workload and keep things running.

“Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to put enough capacity in place to continue operating sustainably.”

The Legion says in the next few weeks its president will meet with the Command office to discuss what happens next.

“We’re hopeful these discussions will help identify the best possible options moving forward, and we will share updates as they become available,” says the statement.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the Legion in Canada.
