Food bank needs a regular bus stop, MLA says

By Grant Warkentin

A regular bus stop near the food bank would help a lot of struggling families and individuals, says North Island MLA Anna Kindy.

At council’s regular meeting last week a letter from Kindy was on the agenda, asking the city to make it easier for people to get to and from the food bank.

“Reliable public transit to the food bank would greatly reduce barriers for vulnerable community members, including low-income individuals, seniors, people with disabilities, and families who are already struggling to meet basic needs,” she said. “Ensuring equitable access to food security resources aligns with community well-being priorities and supports a more inclusive and compassionate Campbell River.”

Kindy said her office has heard numerous stories from people experiencing difficulties accessing the food bank.

“Adding or modifying a route to include this location would significantly improve access, promote dignity, and help ensure that no one is forced to go without food simply because they cannot get to the facility,” she said.

Council agreed with her request, and decided to to send it to staff to work with BC Transit to see what changes can be made to accommodate people using the food bank.
