River flows increasing for spawning steelhead salmon

By Grant Warkentin

Water flows through the Campbell River system will increase starting tonight, to make sure steelhead salmon have suitable spawning grounds.

BC Hydro issued a public safety advisory this morning. Late tonight, water flows will be increased to seven cubic metres per second from the regular four. They will last until April 15, long enough for steelhead to be able to access spawning habitat from the generating station up to Elk Falls.

There will also be several more days of “pulse” flows, two-day increases up to 10 cubic metres per second, intended to mimic early spring conditions for fish in the river. The pulse days will be April 1-2, and April 8-9.

Temporary signs are in place along the trails and in the Elk Falls Canyon area. People are askedto stay away from Elk Falls Canyon, particularly immediately upstream of the falls. They can be safely viewed from the suspension bridge and the lookout point.
