City dusting off old plans to improve local roadways

By Grant Warkentin

The city is pushing ahead with improvements to local roads that have been on the books for 14 years.

This morning council reviewed a new version of the Master Transportation Plan, a long-standing reference document used to prioritize upgrades to the city’s network of roads, bike lanes, paths, sidewalks, and pedestrian paths.

Andy Gaylor, the city’s director of community planning and livability, pointed out the last time the plan was updated was in 2012.

“Obviously the demographic and economic landscape of this city has changed quite dramatically since then, so this updated plan reflects the community’s updated priorities,” he said.

He said staff are looking forward to putting the plan’s recommendations into action, and improving local transportation networks. He said public feedback to the plan, and other related city development plans, has been essential to deciding how to shape Campbell River’s growth over the next 20 years as the city’s population is expected to increase to 50,000 people.

Top priorities over the next year include:

Reconfiguring Hilchey Road’s bike lanes and the current on-street parking setup

Installing bike lanwes on Alder Street between 7th Avenue and St. Ann’s Road

Reconfiguring a multi-use pathway planned for Petersen Road along the section where new apartments are currently under construction

A new sidewalk along 16th Avenue, between Dogwood and Ironwood Streets

Sidewalks along Erickson Road, from Dogwood Street to Highway 19A

Gaylor said a study looking at downtown parking will be coming later to address issues that have come up in light of new developments that have been completed, or are currently underway.
