Thanks to a combination of late winter snow, heavy rain, and warming temperatures, BC Hydro is increasing water flows through the Elk Falls Canyon until the end of the month.
BC Hydro says it has increased water flows through the system from four cubic metres per second to 80, and water flows from the John Hart facilities entering the Campbell River system will increase from 125 cubic metres per second to 200. BC Hydro says the flows will continue at increased rates until March 31, and may increase or decrease dependent on inflows.
“We are advising the public to please stay away from the high and dangerous water flow in lower Campbell River, the Elk Falls Canyon and the area immediately upstream of it, where flows will be about twenty times normal,” the utility said in a statement yesterday. “The falls can be viewed safely from the Elk Falls Suspension Bridge.”
Temporary signs are in place along the river to warn the public of potential dangers.
