It’s been more than six years since Michael Gazetas disappeared from the Comox Valley, without leaving a trace.
No signs of his whereabouts, or his red 2011 Ford Ranger, have been found since. Six years on, the Comox Valley RCMP is renewing its appeal for information.
“With many new residents who might be out exploring Vancouver Island’s backcountry — including hikers, hunters, campers, photographers and mushroom pickers — police are asking the public to remain observant in remote areas, especially in Northern Vancouver Island,” police said in a statement today. “It remains possible that Michael’s vehicle may be in a location not visible from the road or in terrain that is difficult to reach. Natural changes in the landscape over time — including erosion, fallen trees, and shifting vegetation — may reveal areas that were previously obscured.”
Michael’s sisters, Calliope and Sophie, still have hope for a resolution.
“We’re not expecting a miracle, but we want to keep the door open to hope — hope that one day we will know what happened to our brother. We’re asking anyone exploring the backcountry to keep their eyes open. The landscape changes over time, and something that wasn’t visible before may be visible now,” they said in the statement.
Const. Monika Terragni with the RCMP said even the smallest details could be significant.
“A vehicle part, disturbed terrain, an abandoned truck in a difficult-to-access area — any piece of information, no matter how minor it may seem, could help move this investigation forward,” she said. “Our commitment to Michael’s family has not changed. We will follow up on every piece of information provided, and we remain determined to find answers.”
Anyone who sees a red Ford Ranger with licence plate HX4109, or has information related to the disappearance of Michael Gazetas is asked to call the Comox Valley RCMP at (250) 338-1321 and refer to file 2020-1779.
