Third arena to be added to Strathcona Gardens upgrades

Ice arena upgrades planned for Strathcona Gardens in Campbell River have been modified to add a third arena to the facility.

The Strathcona Regional District published the news on its social media feeds this week.

“Based on feedback from the community and facility users, the SRD is working with the city to explore options for a potential third arena,” it says. “There’s still more work to be done before we can share all the details, but stay tuned — more to come soon.”

Plans to upgrade the ice sheets have met with some opposition from user groups, mostly because the original upgrade schedule required existing sheets to be closed for extended periods, interfering with practice and game times, and forcing players to travel out-of-town for routine practices.

Few details are currently available but the new plans are expected to accommodate ice user groups, and the changes are not expected to increase costs beyond the approved $61.2 million budget for the arena upgrades part of the Gardens overhaul.

For more information, including conceptual images, of what the new pools and arenas will look like once completed, visit the regional district’s official project page.

Meanwhile, the pool upgrades are continuing on time and on budget, with the facility on track to open for swimmers this fall.
