Local students advance to provincial trade skills competition

After earning gold in multiple categories, Campbell River high school students will be heading to a provincial Skills Canada trades competition next month.

Skills Canada held the North Island regional competition on Friday, Feb. 20, which each year brings high school students from the region together to test their skills in a variety of trades and disciplines. This year more than 200 students took part, including 70 seniors and 160 juniors. Students from both Carihi and Timberline Secondary Schools participated.

Gold medal winners

  • Jett Taylor and Indy Cook (Carihi) – 3D animation
  • Emily Barker (Carihi) – Digital art
  • Kevin Johnstone (Timberline) – Cabinetmaking
  • Julian Ciumac and unnamed teammate (Timberline) – video production

Silver medal winners

  • Lochlan McConnell and unnamed teammate (Carihi) – 3D animation
  • Oskar Regenspurger (Timberline) – Cabinetmaking
  • Unnamed student (Carihi) – Baking
  • Unnamed student (Timberline) – Digital art

Bronze medal winners

  • Brynna Dybwad (Carihi) – 2D animation
  • Dani Pimlott (Carihi) – Digital art
  • Linden Schulz (Carihi) – Photography

The gold medal winners compete in provincials held in Abbotsford on April 15. Provincial winners will move on to the national competition later this year in Toronto.

Skills Canada supports students in exploring careers in trades and technology through hands-on competitions and learning experiences that build workplace skills.
