By Grant Warkentin

Today, September 1, marks the beginning of the nomination period for candidates to officially declare and register their intent to run in local government elections on October 17, 2026.

Candidates have until the end of the day on September 11, 2026 to register. That applies for city council, regional district, and school board candidates.

In Campbell River, voters will choose a mayor and six councillors.

Residents in the Strathcona Regional District will vote for candidates to represent their area; for example, Quadra Islanders will choose a director for Area C, Cortes Islanders for Area B, and residents living from Campbell River south to the Oyster River will choose a director for Area D.

For School District 72, voters will choose five trustees for the greater Campbell River area. Voters from the Sayward Valley will choose one trustee, and voters from Quadra, Cortes, and Read Islands will choose one trustee to represent the three islands.
