Travellers have a chance to win two free return tickets to Calgary as part of celebrations announcing WestJet’s new Campbell River connector.

During his speech at the Campbell River Airport Monday morning, Dennis Brodie, airport manager, announced a social media contest to win two return tickets between Campbell River and Calgary.

The contest began Feb. 10 with the winner chosen Feb. 28. It’s being held to celebrate the addition of a new airline into the airport’s roster: WestJet, which will be offering direct flights to Calgary from Campbell River beginning in May. This partnership will serve to open the city up to outside interests, particularly from tourists and workers within North America.

“The City of Campbell River Airport (YBL) has served Campbell River and the surrounding region for more than 60 years,” said Brodie, lauding the airport’s dedication to serving the community. “This seasonal service from WestJet delivers new, local options for leisure travellers, resource-sector workers and other business travellers on their way to destinations across North America and beyond.”

Chris White-DeVries, senior manager of airport affairs and public strategy at WestJet, spoke at the announcement.

“[This announcement]is about building bridges, creating opportunities and delivering on our promise of connecting Canadians to where they want to go,” he said.

White-DeVries said WestJet has been eying the Campbell River expansion for a while.

“Campbell River’s unparalleled wildlife, geography and culture make this a world-class destination, which is now unlocked as a single-stop destination from more than 100 destinations served by our global hub in Calgary. We can’t wait for the rest of the world to experience the beauty and wonder of the region,” he said.

The contest will be open until February 28.

Wei Wai Kum, city, and WestJet reps gathered Feb. 9 to announce a new route to Calgary.
