2026-02-09: A whole new world of possibilities will be open for travellers to and from Campbell River, when WestJet begins offering daily connections to Calgary.
“We can’t wait for the world to see just how special Campbell River is,” said Chris White-DeVries, WestJet’s senior manager of airport affairs and public strategy, during an announcement Monday morning at the YBL terminal.
The space around the baggage retrieval was packed with guests and dignitaries, gathered to hear how WestJet will soon be offering daily flights to Calgary starting May 15. They will be available four days per week, and expanded to daily flights for the summer season, June 22 to September 6.
White-DeVries said the connection to WestJet’s main hub in Calgary will allow travellers from Campbell River to easily access international destinations. He said the timing was right to add the new route, as the airline’s economic forecasts predict increased demand for air service in the region. He added that work done to improve the airport in recent years was one of many attractive factors which convinced the airline to expand its Island offerings, and that it’s part of broader domestic expansions by the airline this spring.
Dennis Brodie, airport manager, said the terminal has been an important part of the city for 60 years.
“Today’s announcement builds on that legacy as we welcome a new airline to our airport,” he said.
Brodie added the new route will be beneficial for local businesses, and will expand the region’s tourism capabilities. It will also allow local residents to more easily connect with friends and family on the other side of the Rockies.
Coun. Sean Smyth spoke on behalf of the city, and said the airport is a crucial part of Campbell River’s future growth.
“2025 was Campbell River’s biggest tourism year, and it’s only going to grow from there,” he said.
Smyth said the airport will help the region grow and will bring benefits for everyone, including local First Nations.
Chris Roberts from the Wei Wai Kum Nation opened the announcement with a blessing ceremony performed by young drummers and dancers, featuring three songs. He said the nation was glad to be able to participate in the announcement, and that he was glad to see their connection with the land acknowledged in a meaningful way.
To promote the new service, the city has launched a ticket giveaway contest on social media. For more information, see our related story.
