An Internet argument that escalated over the weekend poses no threat to local high schools, police said this morning.
Campbell River RCMP say an argument between several individuals online escalated into threats of violence. Police investigated and located the person making the threats, and found they are from outside the community. Police seized a BB gun and determined the threats were merely online bluster and bravado.
School District 72 was in contact with RCMP as soon as the situation came to the district’s attention.
“Student and staff safety remains our top priority. We continue to work closely with police and follow established safety procedures,” the district said in a statement posted this morning. “We ask families to rely on information shared by the school or the district and to avoid spreading rumours, as they can cause unnecessary concern.”
Police say local schools remain safe and have spoken to the individual who sparked the incident with their online posts.
